Multi-species Occupancy Modeling Workshop

February 20 @ 9:00 AM - February 21 @ 4:00 PM

Multi-species Occupancy Modeling Workshop

The UF Biodiversity Institute is sponsoring a Multi-Species Occupancy modeling workshop on February 20-21, 2020, 9:00AM-4:00PM, E251 CSE Bldg.. The two-day workshop will provide an introduction to occupancy models, with a focus on how to fit multi-species occupancy models and interpret the model output.

Single-species occupancy models are a well-established method to model both the presence and absence of species, while simultaneously estimating the likelihood of detecting a species. This framework can be extended to model the occurrence of multiple species across multiple sites, while accounting for detection probability. Multi-species Occupancy Models (MSOMs) provide a generalizable framework for joint species distribution modeling (jSDMs), which is a rapidly advancing topic with many potential applications in ecology, evolution and conservation. This two-day workshop has been designed to provide a background in occupancy modeling, with single-species occupancy models on day one, and moving on to multi-species occupancy models on day two.

Organized by Jessica Hightower, Ph.D. candidate, Interdisciplinary Ecology, jnhightower@ufl.edu, the workshop features instructors Dr. Rob Fletcher, Professor, and Gavin Jones, Postdoctoral Associate, from the UF Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation.

Workshop Goals:

1) Provide a theoretical background to both single and multi-species occupancy models
2) Demonstrate how to fit occupancy models in R using available packages
3) Learn how to interpret the output and determine the biological relevance
4) Discuss common challenges of multi-species occupancy models and potential applications

Lunch and coffee will be provided by the UF Biodiversity Institute.
